Altasov found it very unpleasant to recall his break with the editorial board. He pushed it, and its details, away as best he could, but to portray it all in a different light was something that could be done only in the heat of telling the story to others, when the storyteller himself believed what he was saying. With only himself for an audience it came out quite unattractive and not at all comforting, quite unflattering for his self-regard. It would have been awkward to approach it from the angle of his “convictions,” too… But Altasov, with his conciliatory artistic worldview, was always ready to use his convictions to serve anyone and anything. It was after having divined this ability of his that the editorial board proposed that he withdraw. Then he had had to become a civil servant. But what could you say, his position in the service was pitiful…

Service in the provinces is more pleasant; not hard to find a post… But even if there weren’t one to be found!—The house free and clear.—You can probably write too, but just now and then, for your own satisfaction. Work taken on freely will come more easily. Pieces exposing wrongdoing… But actually curse all that, all of it… Gogol never had the remotest idea of treating his “Old-Fashioned” people ironically.* A lofty pleasure—not to get calluses on your hands, nor overtax your brain, to sleep in a soft bed, eat as much as you like. And a man owes it to himself to achieve this, especially when the opportunity presents itself…

Алтасову было очень неприятно воспоминание о разрыве с редакцией. Он сколько мог отклонял его и его подробности, но рисовать все это в другом свете — можно было только в жару рассказа посторонним, когда рассказчик сам верит тому, что говорит. Наедине с самим собою выходило очень некрасиво и неутешительно, очень нелестно для самолюбия. Было бы даже неловко и со стороны «убеждений»… но Алтасов, по своему художественно-примирительному миросозерцанию, был всегда готов служить своими убеждениями кому и чему угодно. Высокое наслаждение — не мозолить рук, не трудить мозга, почивать мягко, кушать вволю.
