Keeping professors from giving away copyright
Good news on the access-to-scholarly-research front. (Hat tip Timothy Burke.) The linked article comes close to making journal publishers into the enemy, and I don’t know that I’m on board for that – at least in Slavic studies, I suspect that no one is getting rich off the free labor of contributors and peer reviewers, and the system is just going along as it has out of inertia. But in a system where the writing and reviewing (if not the editing) is already done on a volunteer basis, or if you like where writers and editorial board members are paid in prestige instead of money, it should be possible to let anyone interested read the articles online.
